This is the journey of two images, two etching plates: Madonna and Child and Sorrowful Madonna. When combined, something new emerges: Madonna Layers.
I scribe and etch the plates for weeks at a time and then I print a state. These steps are repeated indefinitely. These are one-of-a-kind works on paper, not multiples. This lengthy process deteriorates the plates and I encourage this. I like things that are old and worn. I find beauty in erosion and images that fade with time.
When I close my eyes to pray, I don't think of a clear, figurative representation of God. My mind wanders through abstractions. I believe that what you see is not nearly as important as what you feel. By combining these plates I am looking for new images or sacred meanings to emerge.
