Andrius Kulikauskas: a factual note

Andrius Kulikauskas is a Lithuanian independent philosopher and mathematician known in online-collaboration circles for the network of independent thinkers he organised in the 1998–2010 period. This note gives the main facts as he publishes them, for readers who arrive here looking for him. The Working Commons is an independent publication: it is not his site, does not speak for him and has no connection with his projects.

Background

According to the biography he publishes on his website Math 4 Wisdom, Kulikauskas earned bachelor's degrees in mathematics and physics from the University of Chicago in 1986 and a PhD in mathematics from the University of California, San Diego, in 1993.

Minčių sodas

From 1998 to 2010 he ran an online laboratory called Minčių sodas, Lithuanian for "orchard of thoughts", which brought together independent thinkers and volunteers in many countries through email groups, wikis and chat. Its working groups dealt with subjects that recur on this site: organising volunteer endeavors, including people who are offline, articulating personal values and open hardware.

His biography states that in 2008 he led an effort, which he calls the "Pyramid of Peace", involving about one hundred peacemakers in Kenya and one hundred online volunteers, in response to the post-election violence. That figure comes from his own account; we have not found an independent evaluation of the project. Our article on Kenya in 2007–2008 sets the crisis in its documented context.

Later work

His published biography also reports that since 2014 he has given dozens of academic talks on his philosophy, including at the World Congress of Philosophy and the World Congress of Universal Logic, and that he writes in English on Math 4 Wisdom and in Lithuanian on a personal site. It describes his involvement in public debates in Lithuania about the memory of the Holocaust and about the site of Vilnius's old Jewish cemetery.

His doctoral thesis

A copy of his 1993 doctoral thesis in mathematics was once available for download at an address on this domain. We do not hold or republish it. Readers looking for it should consult the University of California, San Diego library catalogue or ProQuest Dissertations & Theses, which list American doctoral dissertations.
